THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, america was a nation of contrasts. Prosperity made daily life more comfortable but the Cold War and various conflicts engendered a politically conservative climate with a growing sense of conformity.

The figure of the American teenager appeared: these youngsters, said to belong to "the luckiest generation" in a 1954 Life article, were often represented as spoilt and self-confident, gaining independence while still being protected by their parents.

The Catcher in the Rye is a coming-of-age novel.
