S2 DOC 1 Elliott Erwitt - Segregated Water Fountains (1950, North Carolina)
S2 DOC 1 Story - Whites Only (2010)
S1 DOC 1 Ted T. Ellis - Champions of Justice, 1993
The painting represents hyphenated Americans (African Americans, Latin Americans , Asian Americans...) who are part of the judicial system (a policement, a judge, a jury box, lawyers...), fighting for racial justice.
Lady Justice in the background is the allegorical personification of Justice and Law.
She hols a set of scales which stand for equity, the weighing of evidence and a symbol of fairness.
She is blinfolded, to show impartiality and objectivity.
Her blindness can be a reference to the need for justice to be more colourblind.
This painting celebrates hyphenated Americans who have contributed and still contribute to the fight for equal justice in the US (lawyers, judges, demonstrators, famous figures...)
